The Best Place to Get Personal with Aviation in Denver
Written and Photographed by R. Ashley

Dreaming of flying? Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum is not just a place where you can see airplanes — it’s a playground for learning, testing your skills, and connecting with real pilots.
At the museum’s Exploration of Flight campus (Centennial, CO), visitors get personal with planes, learning hands-on about aerodynamics, physics, and the fundamentals of flight. If you’ve ever wanted to fly but are hesitating to book a lesson, spend $12 ($6 for kids) for a day of play in the crosswind or flight simulator, ask your burning questions to an active pilot, and if you’re ready, try a ride in the gyro-chair.
On Labor Day weekend, the museum hosted its “History Comes to Life” showcase in collaboration with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and the Commemorative Air Force. Four historic planes gave rides and tours, allowing people to step back in time and see Denver from their own jumpseat on the C-47 that led the Normandy invasion in 1944. On my flight on the C-45 “Lil Raider,” one passenger even rode in the co-pilot’s seat.
The museum offers a new showcase every Saturday featuring a theme or type of aircraft, a food truck, and the opportunity to watch air traffic up close from the Wings ramp. You can also book a flight in one of the resident Wings planes.
The best part is you don’t need any entry-level knowledge to jump in and enjoy your time at Exploration of Flight. The entire experience is designed to meet you where you are and give you a chance to simply play, experiment, and explore.
